Group warns more oil trains could cut through Fremont

Published Thursday July 28

The specter of more freight trains laden with oil tank cars rumbling through Niles Canyon on the same tracks used by a commuter line seeking expansion has worried a group of Fremont residents into forming a coalition to wave warning flags.

After a 90-minute meeting held May 26 in Union City on the environmental review of Altamont Corridor Express’ proposed ACEforward project, abundant people huddled in the city hall parking lot to discuss how commuter trains and freight cars would mesh if more of each share the tracks.

As recently as March, a Stockton-bound ACE train derailed into Alameda Creek along Niles Canyon in Sunol. About a dozen people were injured, 4 seriously.
